PROJECT

#YOUTHEXPRESS

CONTEXT

In 2018, AHJ in partnership with Solidarité, Intervention & Formation - Solinfo  has been offering incarcerated minors in Erbil a safe and rewarding space for expression through art mediation. Under the guidance of psychologists and educators the youth engage in art therapy sessions that allow them to be heard, develop resilience, and explore their creativity.

Often forgotten by society and excluded from most humanitarian programs, these young detainees find in AHJ’s workshops an opportunity to begin their personal development journey and strengthen their ability to reintegrate into society upon release.

OBJECTIVES

The project uses art therapy and psychological support to give incarcerated minors in Erbil a safe space to express themselves, develop resilience, and prepare for reintegration into society.

EMPOWERMENT

Exhibit artworks and empower young detainees to present them

RESULTS

Since the launch of the program, young detainees have gained self-confidence and experienced recognition as individuals with a voice. Participants have developed their creative and emotional expression skills, which has strengthened their resilience and ability to manage stress. The workshops have fostered a sense of belonging and solidarity within the group, helping to reduce feelings of isolation. Several of the artworks created by the minors have been exhibited, providing them with visibility and validation from the broader community.

Since 2019, Solinfo has taken the lead in running and expanding the project, opening a second workshop in an orphanage to reach more vulnerable youth
